A boy purchased? (bought) a? party-length sandwich 5050 in. long. He wants to cut it into three pieces so that the middle piece is 66 in. longer than the shortest piece and the shortest piece is 88 in. shorter than the longest piece. How long should the three pieces? be?

we have 3 pieces that total to 5050 inches

1). s = shortest piece

2). m = s+ 66 = middle piece

3). s = L - 88   ... L = longest piece

 

rewrite equation 3 as L = s+ 88

 

s + m + L = 5050

s + (s + 66) + (s + 88) = 5050

3s + 154 = 5050

 

solve for s 

 

add 66 to s for middle piece length

 

add 88 to s for length of longest piece
