Nationalism affected Germany in a negative way primarily because it was used as a tool for Hitler to blind his people to the atrocities of his regime. This practice, however, had its start long before World War Two actually began. Following Germany's loss in the first World War and the Treaty of Versailles--which tagged the German's for the majority of the blame for World War One--Germany was devastated militarily, politically, and socially. Hitler really seized the opportunity of a downtrodden German people searching for a Nationalistic identity. As Hitler gained power (beginning really in the 1920s), he used a number of ideas and portrayed them to the Germans as Nationalistic ideas.
Racism (Hitler blamed other people for the problems of the Germans).
Military Buildup (Hitler suggested the Germans needed to defend themselves).

There are, as you probably know, many other ideas Hitler used to gain the backing of the German people, many of which he couched under the guise of Nationalism. Hope this gives you a good start, perhaps sparks some ideas.
