asked • 05/25/16Jenny, Katie and Lelei each had some sweets. Katie had 8 and Lelei had 14. Jenny gave one-half of her sweets to Katie. Then Katie gave one-half of her total number of sweets to Lelei. Then Lelei gave one-half of her total number of sweets to Jenny. If Jenny ended up with the same number of sweets as she had at the start, how many was that?

Jenny's total at start is X, and we must return back to X at the end.

Since Jenny gives half to Katie, that means that Katie will have X/2 + 8.

Katie then gives half to Lelei, which means Lelei will have (X/2 + 8)/2 + 14.

Now Lelei gives half back to Jenny.

this means that ((X/2 + 8)/2 + 14)/2

Since we are told that Jenny returns to the original amount, X

X/2 = ((X/2 + 8)/2 + 14)/2

and you can solve for X

No. of sweets Lelei has =14

Jenny gave one-half of her sweets to Katie.

So now Jenny has= x/2

Katie has=8 +x/2=(16+x)/2

Then Katie gave one-half of her total number of sweets to Lelei

So Lelei has =14 +(16+x)/4=(56+16+x)/4=(72+x)/4

Then Lelei gave one-half of her total number of sweets to Jenny

So now Jenny has=x/2 +(72+x)/8=(4x+72+x)/8=(5x+72)/8

Jenny ended up with the same number of sweets as she had at the start

(5x+72)/8=x

5x+72=8x

3x= 72

x=24

So Jenny had=24
