You work it out step by step:
 
1. Start: 48 cookies
2. Son ate ¼ of them, which is 12 (stomach ache!)
3. 36 cookies remain at this point.
4. Husband ate one sixth of them; that's 6 cookies for him, 30 remain.
 
Note:
One sixth of 36 is six divided into 36--quotient (answer) is 6
