The ancient caste system in India was designed on the basis of division of labor as follows;
Brahmins engaged in educational activities and community counseling through religion and education.
Kshatriyas protected communities and were engaged in warfare and defense.
Vaishyas  were traders, established businesses and brought prosperity and additional resources in the communities.
Shudras were responsible for cleaning, cremating or disposing dead bodies of animals and other community members.
The general religious belief was that if one does  his/her job right with honesty and humiliation than in the next human incarnation the person would be born in the upper caste. If upper caste individuals did not do their job right than they would be born in the lower caste: a result of good and bad "Karma" respectively.
BTW, Hindu religion claims that  a soul undergoes 84000 animal reincarnations before getting a second human reincarnation.
Hope this helps.
