the boat rental is 500 for the first two hours and 50 for each additional half hour the family budgeted 700 to rent boat what is the maximun number of additional half hours

Since they have $700, we know they can get the boat for over 2hrs, because the first 2hrs costs $500.  Now the question is how many much longer than 2hrs can they keep the boat.

 

$500+50x=$700

 

In this case x is the in half hours.

 

 500+50x=700

-500         -500

 

50x=200

 

now divide each side by 50

 

x=4

 

which means they have enough money for an addition 4 half hours

Michael hello.  There is more than one way to set this inequality up.  Lets do it the easiest way.  Let x represent the number of additional half hours beyond the first four (this is because the 500 accounts for the cost of the first 2 hours), then we have 500+50x is less than or equal to 700.  Now subtract 500 from each side and then divide by 50.  We get x is less than or equal to 4.  This means that the maximum value for x is 4.  Therefore the maximum number of additional half hours that the boat can be rented by this family is four. The maximum total amount of time they can rent the boat is 2+ 4(.5)=4 hours.
