Destiny,
Search the web for "television history", "CRT" (which is a.k.a a cathode ray tube), and "LED screen" (which is a typical flat screen).
A cathode ray tube was originally developed by J.J. Thompson in the discovery of electrons in 1899. It consists of a heater for releasing electrons and an electromagnet and electrified metal plates for directing the electrons at a light sensitive screen in a large vacuum tube. The screen had to be about a foot from the electron gun, so these TVs were placed in cabinets at least that deep and often had the small end of the vacuum tube protruding from the back of the cabinet.
A LED is a light emitting diode, which is a small electronic device. They are no deeper than a circuit board, and several million of them can be placed in an array to create a screen that can be mounted a few inches from a wall.
Style in the context of this question should not be though of a synonymous with fashion: Perhaps the better phrasing would be: What type of screen or which display technology was used as a TV display in the 1930s. Consumer TVs were not sold in any amounts until after WWII (the late 1940s), and only then did their wooden cabinets appear as furniture with any particular style.
Michael.
