Th Columbian Exchange was the spread of people, animals, diseases, and plants from the "Old World" (Europe, Asia, Africa) to the "New World" (North and South America) and vice versa. The exchange took place shortly after the exploration by Columbus as people made contact. The spread of disease was unintentional but had devastating impacts on the people of the America's (especially smallpox). Many plants and animals changed the environments and native species would sometime go extinct. The spread of plants also changed the diets of people around the world. Prior to the Columbian Exchange their were no tomatoes in Italy, no potatoes in Ireland, and no pigs, horses, or cattle in the America's.
