Here are some the specific violations of Treaty of Versailles committed by Adolf Hitler and/or the government of Nazi Germany that he led:
- Article 42 of the treaty stated, "Germany is forbidden to maintain or construct any fortifications either on the left bank of the Rhine or on the right bank to the west of a line drawn 50 kilometres to the East of the Rhine," and Article 43 stated, "In the area defined above the maintenance and the assembly of armed forces, either permanently or temporarily, and military maneuvers of any kind, as well as the upkeep of all permanent works for mobilization, are in the same way forbidden." But on March 7, 1936, German troops entered these areas.
- Article 80 of the treaty stated, "Germany acknowledges and will respect strictly the independence of Austria, within the frontiers which may be fixed in a Treaty between that State and the Principal Allied and Associated Powers; she agrees that this independence shall be inalienable, except with the consent of the Council of the League of Nations. " But after a period in which pro-Nazi support was fomented in Austria, German troops invaded that country on March 12, 1938.
- Part 1. of Article 160 of the treaty stated, "After [March 31, 1920] the total number of effectives in the Army of the States constituting Germany must not exceed one hundred thousand men . . . " But shortly after assuming dictatorial power in Germany Hitler ordered the size of the army to be increased to 300,000.
- Article 198 of the treaty stated, "The armed forces of Germany must not include any military or naval air forces." But shortly after Hitler came to power, the Reich Air Ministry was established, which soon afterwards consolidated other aviation organizations into a German air force, the Luftwaffe.
