5 gallons * (2/3) cup/gallon = 5 * (2/3) cup.  The gallon unit cancels, leaving 10/3 cups or 3 1/3  cups.

This is a proportion or ratio problem. The best way to handle these problems is:
     - Set it up as fractions equal to each other.
     - Be very careful where you put the x (the unknown)
     - Cross-multiply to solve.

 

So our formula is:

 

 2/3           X

____   =   ___

  1             5

 

When we cross-multiply we get:

 

X = 2/3 x 5

 

You can probably take it from there.  Let me know what you get.
