The factors of 5p2 are:   1, 5, p, p2
The factors of 12q2 are:   1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, q, q2
 
The GCF (Greatest Common Factor) is the largest value ("Greatest") that is shared ("Common") in those two lists of "Factors."    Looks like the GCF=1.
 
The expression is:     1*5*p*p  +  1*2*2*3*q*q
The factoring is:   (1)(5p2+12q2)
 
(Note: Values of p and q are unspecified, so we don't know whether they share factors or not.  Thus, we are forced to assume that they don't.)

Determination of the GCF is accomplished by factoring into primes. 1 is not a prime.
The expressions does not have a GCF, they are relatively prime.

Examples:   GCF(5,12)=1.      GCD(5,12)=1.
