mystery number. # has 6 digits, value of smallest digit is 0.01, value of largest digit is 8,000, digit in tens place is 2 less than digit in hundreds place. sum of digit in tens place and in hundreds place is equal to digit in thousands place. digit in tenths place had same value in every place. remaining digit is largest even digit. what is the mystery number?

The largest digit is worth 8000, while the smallest is .01, so the number  is 

 

8ABC.D1, where ABCD are digits we don't yet know.

 

The digit in the tens place (B) is 2 less than the one in the hundreds place (A).  But when you add them together, they total 8, which is the digit in the thousands place. Therefore A is 5 and B is 3.  

In the tenths place (D), the digit has the same value in every place.  The only digit that works here is 0, which is worth 0 no matter where in the number it is placed.  (e.g. 0 units or 0 tenths or 0 hundreds, etc...)

Remaining digit (C) is largest even digit, which is 8.
