In American history consider what happened when slaves from Africa were "put together" with those from European descent.  In Europe, understand that in 1992 the strong-armed government in Yugoslavia was toppled.  Now, instead of 1 country, there are 6!  You can probably guess why- at least one major reason.  It relates to your question.
