The area of a rectangle is A=lw

 

Let w= the width

Let w+4=the length

 

w(w+4)=32

w²+4w=32

w²+4w-32=0

(w+8)(w-4)=0

 

w+8=0      and    w-4=0

w=-8                    w=4

 

w=-8 is rejected because a width cannot be negative

 

Therefore the width is 4 and the length is w+4=4+4=8

 

ANSWER: Width is 4 inches and the length is 8 inches
