Let x= the length of the smallest side
let x+4= the length of the medium side
2x=the length of the longest side
x+x+4+2x=40
4x+4=40
4x=36
x=9
x+4=9+4=13
2x=2(9)=18
ANSWER: the smallest is 9 inches, the medium side is 13 inches and the longest side is 18 inches.
