Let x = the smaller angle

let 3x+24=the smaller angle

 

(a) Find the measure of each angle if they are complements of each other.

x+3x+24=90

4x+24=90

4x=66

x=16.5

 

smaller angle:  16.5°

larger angle:  90-16.5°=73.516.5°

 

(b) Find the measure of each angle if they are supplements of each other.

x+3x+24=180

4x+24=180

4x=156

x=39

 

smaller angle:  39°

larger angle: 180-39°=141°

        From this we get, (3x + 24) + x = 90

        combining like terms, 4x = 66

        solving for x, we get x = 16.5 deg (this is the smaller angle)

        3(16.5) + 24 = 73.5 deg (this is the larger angle)

 

(b) supplementary angles is when the sum of the angles is 180 deg

        From this we get, (3x + 24) + x = 180

        combining like terms, 4x = 156
