How much did Jonah and Becky have to pay?

Jonah and Becky ate lunch. the total cost of their meals was $22.75 befre sales tax and tip. Jonah's meal cost 1/5 more than Becky's  and they each wanted to pa for their own. After adding 5% tax and a 20% tip each added to the total cost of the meals how much did Jonh and Becky have to pay?

Debbie, if their meals cost $22.75 and we add 5% tax, then the total is 22.75(1.05) = 23.89. With the 20% tip, 23.89(1.2) = 28.67

 

If x = Becky's cost, then Jonah's is (6/5)x.

 

x + (6/5)x = 28.67

    (11/5)x = 28.67

           11x = 143.35

               x = 13.03

 

13.03(6/5) = 15.64

 

So, Becky paid $13.03 and Jonah paid $15.64.
