what color was the bear

4 men set up camp in the wilderness. Starting from their camp they walked ten miles south, then ten miles west, suddenly they saw a bear and ran back to their camp ten miles. what color was the bear?

Note that 10 miles South and then 10 miles West usually creates a triangle with the hypotenuse "going back to the camp" that is (10)(1.414) miles [ or 10√2 miles).

 

How can the distance back to camp be just 10 miles?  This only happens at the North Pole.  That means that the campers saw a polar bear (if one is even therel) which appear white to tan but are actually transparent.
