There are two airplanes that pass each other, one headed north and the other south. One of the planes is a jet traveling at 563mph, the other a biplane traveling at 118mph. The jet planes consumes 3.2 gallons of gas per mile and the biplane 0.25 gallons per mile

Distance of separation=northern distance + southern distance

 

northern distance=(563 miles/1 hour)*1 hour or 563 miles.

 

southern distance=(118 miles/ 1 hour)* 1 hour or 118 miles.

 

Distance of separation=563 miles + 118 miles or 681 miles.
