Expression of how many pieces of food in the trail mix

A trail mix contains peanuts, raisins and Eminem's. In the mix the amount of peanuts is three times the amount of M&M's the amount of raisins is two times the amount of M&M's. Let M represent the M&M's. write and simplify an expression for the total number of pieces of food in the trail mix.

"Let M represent the M&M's"  ==>  M = number of M&M's  

 

Let P = number of peanuts  and  let R = number of raisins  

 

"amount of peanuts is three times the amount of M&M's"  ==>  P = 3*M  

 

"amount of raisins is two times the amount of M&M's"  ==>  R = 2*M  

 

So the total number of food pieces is  P + R + M = 3*M + 2*M + M = 6*M
