I have an equations such as 3y+15=5x I am not certain how to solve this equation in order to graph it

3y=5x-15

y=(5/3)x-5

choose values for x that are divisible by 3 to get integer y-values

x=0,  y=-5

x=3,  y=0

You're going to want to build an X, Y table.

To do that you solve for Y

 

To solve the equation for Y:

3Y+15=5x

Y +5= (5/3)X

Y= (5/3)X -5

 

X            Y

1            1(2/3) -5 = 3 (1/3)

2             4 (1/3) -5 = 2/3

etc.

One would just solve for y in terms of x:

 

y = (3/5)x - 15/3 = .6x - 5

 

The x intercept is where y = 0. 

 

In this case that is x = 5/.6 = 8.33

 

The slope is .6, so one would use these two pieces of information to draw the graph.

 

Alternatively, one can find the y intercept by setting x = 0 and getting y = -5.
