Well the social studies question i am trying to ask is what are the challenges you think they will create for settlers.

I'm not sure where your settlers are settling but the purpose of the question is for you to consider the physical geography (mountains, rivers, deserts, oceans, etc.) of the area and list possible challenges they might create.  Imagine yourself (or horse and cart, dog and sled, boat, etc.) carrying all you posses, you can even add in a family.  Now think about what it would be like to look into the distance and see a mountain range that you must cross.  What will that be like?  What challenges will that include?  Go through that process for any physical geography that your settlers might face.  I imagine a few examples would be enough to satisfy the question.
