Let 2X= Jayden's amount=J , and  let 3X=Isabella's amount=I  

 

Then  2X+3X=$40.      Now,  solve for "X."
 

5X=40                        Divide both sides of the equation by 5.

 

X=40/5=8                  Substitute "X's" value into  2x=_______=Jayden's amound     

 

Don't forget to check your work by substituting   X=8 back into 2X+3X=40.  You should get 40=40, which is true, so the value X=8 is also a true answer.

If Jayden and Isabella share the reward in a ratio of 2:3, this means that Jayden received 2/5 of the reward and Isabella receives 3/5 of the reward.

 

These ratios are derived as follows:

 

Think of the terms probability and odds.

 

In the case of probability you have a fraction where the numerator is the number of "hits" and the denominator is the total.  We can express this as p/(p+q), where  p is the number of hits and q is the number of misses.

 

In the case of odds you have a fraction where the numerator is the number of hits and the denominator is the number of misses.  We can express this as p/q, defining p and q as above.

 

So the ratio of what Jayden and Isabella receive can be thought of as odds, where p is what Jayden receives and q is what she doesn't receive, in other words, what Isabella receives.

 

If p=2 and q=3, then the probability (or ratio) of what Jayden received is p/(p+q) or 2/(2+3) = 2/5.  And 3/5 is what Isabella receives.

 

So Jayden receives

40(2/5) = 16

 

Isabella receives

40(3/5) = 24
