x/6 - y/7 = 1

x/6 - y/7 = 1         multiply all terms by LCD, 42

7x - 6y = 42         subtract 7x from both sides

- 6y = -7x + 42    divide both sides by -6

y = 7x/6 - 7

1. Find the common denominator between 6 and 7.  This is 42.

2. In order to get a denominator of 42 for x/6, both the top and bottom have to be multiplied by 7

4. In order to get a denominator of 42 for y/7, both the top and bottom have to be multiplied by 6

5. y/7 is now 6y

                   42

 

6. The new equation is 7x - 6y = 1

                                   42

 

7. Multiply both sides of "=" by 42 to get rid of the denominator

7x - 6y = 42

 

8. Subtract "7x" from both sides of =

-6y = -7x + 42

 

9. Get "y" by itself and simplify if possible.
