The incidence of an illness is estimated to be 8%. In a population of 2000, what would be the number of people who would contract this specific illness?

This is simplistic. Granted, 8% of 2000 is 160, but in actuality the situation is best considered as a Binomial distribution. There are different probabilities for every possible outcome, e.g. 0 infections up to 2000 infections.

If 8% of the population is expected to contract the illness, and we have a population of 2000, the number of people expected to contract the illness is.

 

2000 x .08 = 160
