Boat downstream world problem

a boat traveled downstream a distance of 22miles and then came right back. If the speed of the current was 6mph and the total trip took 2 hours and 45 minutes, find the average speed of the boat relative to the water?

The boat went 22 miles downstream and then came back upstream 22 miles.  So, it traveled 44 miles.  It took 2.75 hours.  So, we divide 44 by 2.75 to find the average speed.

 

44 / 2.75 = 16

 

The average speed of the boat is 16 miles per hour.
