If B is a positive number, then an inequality of the form lAl > B can be rewritten as:  A > B or A < -B.

 

So, if l8x-9l ≥ 8, then 8x-9 ≥ 8 or 8x-9 ≤ -8

 

                                 8x ≥ 17 or 8x ≤ 1

 

                                  x ≥ 17/8 or x ≤ 1/8

 

Note:  If B > 0, then the inequality lAl < B is equivalent to -B<A<B.
