Flying against the wind, a jet travels 3700 miles in 5 hours. Flying with the wind, the same jet travels 8400 miles in 7 hours. What is the rate of the jet in still air and what is the rate of the wind

3700=(r-w)5

8400=(r+w)7

divide both sides of the first equation by 5 and divide both sides of the second equation by 7

740=r-w

1200=r+w

add these equations

1940=2r (the w's cancel)

r=1940/2

r=970 mph for the rate of the jet

1200=r+w

1200=970+w

1200-970=w

w=230 mph for the rate of the wind
