What are these letters doing in my equations? Here comes algebra!
Call the geese "g" and the rabbits "r".
Since each animal only has one head, we know that:
g+r = 40
We also know that some combination of 4-footed rabbits and 2-footed geese gives us 88 feet in total, so:
4r + 2g = 88.
Eliminate one variable:
If g + r = 40, we can also say that r = 40 - g.
Substitute 40 - g where you see r in the equation, so:
4r + 2g becomes 4(40 - g) + 2g = 88
Distribute to get 160 - 4g + 2g =88, or 160 - 2g = 88.
Subtract 88 from both sites, which gives you
72 - 2g = 0, which tells you that
2g = 72, so g = 36. There are 36 geese, whose feet total 72, and 4 rabbits, whose feet total 16.
72 + 16 = 88 feet, and 36 geese plus 4 rabbits = 44 heads.
There ya go!
