On Monday it rained 1 1/4 inches on Tuesday it rained  3/5 inch how much more did it rain on Monday then on Tuesday

It rained 13/20 of an inch more on Monday than Tuesday.

You want to find a common denominator anytime you have to subtract fractions.  In this case, we want to do:          (5/4) - (3/5)

 

The least common denominator of 4 and 5 is 20.

 

So, we end up with 25/20 - 12/20.  Our answer is: 13/20

We have to subtract 3/5 inch (amount of rain on Tuesday) from 5/4 inch (amount of rain on Monday) to know how much more it rained on Monday. That is 5/4 - 3/5 = 13/20 or 0.65 inch.
