a cold stone creamery ice cream shop sells sundaes for 3.60 and banana splits for 4.25. the shop sells 4 times as many sundaes as banana splits. if total sales amounted to 3730 last weekend. how many banana splits were sold?

Let B= banana splits

B=4S

 

Writing the equations:

1) 3.60S+4.25B=3730

 

Since the store sells 4 sundaes for each split we know the amount of money they make on sundaes is
4x3.60 = $14.40 for each split they sell, we can then subsistute 14.40B for 3.60S

 

14.40B+4.25B=3730

 

Solving for B, we get B=200.

 

Let's check our answer:

 

(200 x 4.25) + (800 x 3.60) = 3730
