Juan Ponce de León was a Spanish conquistador. He was in search of the fountain of youth rumored to be in Bimini, a series of islands on the west of the Bahamas. Native Americans told a story of eternal life and staying young to Ponce de León. In the year 1513, Ponce de, Ponce León thought he found Bimini and returned to Spain in 1514. Once de León arrived back in Spain, he received the honor of becoming a knight.
However, de León landed in what is called present-day Florida near Cape Canaveral and did not find the fountain of youth. Native Americans did not want the Spanish on their land in Florida. In 1521, de León headed back to Florida with several Spanish boats. Upon arrival in Florida Native Americans attacked de León and his Spanish settlers. Ponce de León became badly injured and ended up dying.
