Hi Carina, the formula for the volume of a box (rectangle) is: V = L * W * H.
We know what L, W, and H are:
L = 1 - ax
W = 2x + 1
H = x + 2a
To find the volume, substitute into the formula:
V = (1 - ax) * (2x + 1) * (x + 2a)
V = (2x + 1 - 2ax2 - 2ax) * (x + 2a)
V = 2x2 + x - 2ax3 - 2ax2 + 4ax + 2a - 4a2x2 - 4a2x
V = 2a + (1 + 4a - 2a2) * x + (2 - a - 4a2) * x2 - 2a * x3
