Race relations have changed dramatically since the 1950's. The separate but equal doctrine that legitimized segregation was struck down by the Brown vs. Board of Education decision in 1954, so schools are no longer segregated. This shows a shift in cultural values from ethnocitricity to accepting and valuing diversity. In addition, cultural values about the role and place of women in society have shifted dramatically. In 1950, fewer than 20% of women worked outside the home, but in 1990 that figure had more than tripled. This signalled that women were valued by society for more than their homemaking skills. Lastly, in 1950 every state had laws against homosexuality; by 1990 two-thirds of the states had struck those laws down. (It was not until 2003 that all states had laws against homosexuality struck down by the Supreme Court of the United States.) This shift in laws reflects a shift in values from being homophobic to embracing the right of the individual to privacy of choice in these matters.
Note: I knew these three areas were areas of change because I lived through these eras. Then I researched my own ideas by googling. None of this is copied -- just confirmed by research. Good luck to you!
