I'm going to use decimal notation to help minimize any confusion here.

 

hence, 16 3/4 = 16.75     and 18 1/2 = 18.5

 

The difference in the first two numbers is : 16.75 - 15 = 1.75

The difference in the 3rd and the 2nd numbers : 18.5 - 16.75 = 1.75

 

So it appears that we are adding 1.75 to each number to get the next value.

 

So the next 2 numbers in this sequence would be 

 

18.5 + 1.75 = 20.25

20.25 + 1.75 = 22.0

One strategy is to see if there is a constant difference between terms. If so, it is an arithmetic sequence. You get lucky here because there is a constant difference; it is 1 3/4 or 7/4 or 1.75. So to get the next term, add 1.75. The next two numbers (following the mixed number format of the question) are 20 1/4 and 22.

Ryan gave a great answer.  The first thing to check for in a sequential pattern is to see if there is a constant change between each number in the pattern.  In this case 1.75 was added to each number to get the next number.  If you keep adding 1.75 to each number the next two numbers are 20.25 (20 1/4) and then 22.
