tickets were sold for the school play. They were either adult tickets or student tickets. The number of student tickets sold was two times the number of adult tickets sold. How many adult tickets were sold?

Brianna,  Let x=adult tickets and let 2(x)=student tickets.  The total tickets =237.  Now, set up the equation:  x + 2x=237;  Combine the variables:  3x=237;  Divide both sides of the equation by 3.  x =79 which are the adult tickets and 2(79) is 158 which are the student tickets.  Check:  79 +158=237; and 237=237.

This problem gives us two types of tickets:  Adult (A)  and  Student (S)

 

We have two conditions:

 

 Total tickets = Adult tickets and Student tickets        237 = A + S

 

 Number of Student tickets = 2 x Number of Adult tickets     S = 2A

 

To solve:

 

Substitute 2A into the first equation:    

 

237 = A + 2A    

237 = 3A

79 = A

 

Now use the second equation:  S = 2A = 2*79 = 158

 

So we have 79 Adult tickets and 158 Student tickets.  Check:  79 + 158 = 237    It works!
