X and Y word problem.

A recipe calls for 6 oz of milk. Let x be the amount of milk used. Let y be the amount of flower used. Express the relationship with an equation. Is the relationship between x and y proportional? If you use 15 oz of milk, how much flour should you use?

Yes, the amount of milk and flour should be proportional.  But you don't have the value of flour for the 6 oz of milk or the 15 oz of milk.  So your equation will have two variables.  Since they are proportional, you can make them equal. Something like this:

 

6/y = 15 / y'  The question is what is y'?  So solve it for the y' variable.
