Question

Glob mixture is made by mixing glue and corn starch in a ratio of 3 to 2. How much glue and how much corn is needed to make 85 cups of mixture.

Let's begin by writing our given ratio to make 1 cup of the glob mixture:

    1 cup glob = 3 parts glue / 2 parts corn starch

 

To make 85 cups of the glob mixture, we simply multiply the fraction (3/2) for 1 cup by (85/85) to scale up the components to make 85 cups.  Note that multiplying the fraction by a form of 1 (85/85) does NOT change the meaning (value) of the fraction, but only its form (an equivalent ratio for 85 cups as opposed to just 1 cup):

    (3/2)(85/85) = (3 x 85)/(2 x 85) = 255/170

     85 cups glob =

         255 parts glue / 170 parts corn starch
