Picture all the one inch cubes stacked together in the original 4 x 4 x 4 inch cube.

The pieces that have foil on 3 sides must be the corner cubes. Since there are 8 corners in a cube, there are 8 cubes with foil on 3 sides.

The pieces with foil on 2 sides will be on the edge but cannot be the corner cubes. If you just look at one side of the cube, there are 8 pieces that fit the requirement. On the opposite side, there are another 8 pieces. Then on the two remaining sides, there are 4 pieces per side (because 4 were counted already), so there are 24 pieces today with foil on 2 sides.

There are 4 pieces of cube with foil on one side per side. A cube has 6 sides, so there are 24 pieces of cubes with foil on one side.

Then if you subtract all the above answers from 64, you are left with 8, so there are 8 pieces of cubes with no foil.
