We're doing Percents Greater Than 100 and I need help

Question

On Saturday, Breanna drove 10 miles. On Sunday, she drove 70 miles. The number of miles Breanna drove on Sunday is what percent of the number of miles she drove on Saturday?

percentage=rate x base

p=r x b

the percentage is the IS number, the base is the OF number, and the rate is the percent

the question asks: 70 is what percent of 10 ?

70=r x 10

70/10=r, which must be expressed as a percent

7=r

r=7/1=?/100

?=700

r=700 %

Percents greater than 100 seem scary at first, but it's important to remember that they work just like percentages you're used to seeing.  If you're more comfortable with percentages less than 100, think about what you would do if I asked you, "The number of miles Breanna drove on Saturday is what percent of the number of miles she drove on Sunday?"  You would divide 10 by 70 and then multiply that by 100 (it's about 14%).

 

You can do the same thing here, just flip the numbers!  70/10 = 7, and 7 times 100 is 700.  The number of miles she drove on Sunday is 700% of what she drove on Saturday.

 

Where it starts to get a little trickier is if they ask something like "the number of miles she drove increased by what percent?" which is a very different question.  I can explain the difference if you'd like me to.
