To solve problems like this you need to isolate the variable, that is, get the equation into the form x = (something)
First subtract 14 from both sides of the equation to get
(3/4)x = 8 - 14 = -6
Then multiply both sides of the equation by the inverse of (3/4), which is (4/3), to get
x = -6 * ( 4/3) = -24/3 = -8
so x = -8 is the answer
Check: (3/4)*(-8) + 14 = -6 + 14 = 8.
