5 and 1/2 - 3 and 1/2 = 2 hours

5 and 1/2 + 3 and 1/2 = 9 hours

Did you mean 5/2 - 3/2 = 1 hour

and 5/2 + 3/2 = 8/2 = 4 hours

doesn't make sense
