if you round to the nearest hundredth, you must have a digit in the thousandths place and you can have other digits in other smaller places but we'll use just 3-place decimals
2.795 rounds to 2.80 because the 5 tells you to round up so the 9 increases to 10, you put down the zero and you carry the one and make the 7 an 8-you must keep the zero in the hundredths place to indicate that the number was rounded to the nearest hundredth, otherwise the number will look like it was rounded to the nearest tenth; 2.8 is not correct
2.796=2.80 because the 6 tells you to round up with the same reasoning as above
2.797=2.80
