The definitions of the x and y intercepts are as follows:
- x-intercept is a point on a graph where y is zero
- y-intercept is a point on a graph where x is zero
Therefore taking these definitions, if you had the equation of a graph : 5x + y = 9
you would find the x-intercept by replacing y with zero. Therefore:
5x + 0 = 9 => 5x = 9 => x = 5/9. When y is zero x is 5/9 which also means that the x-intercept is 5/9
To find the y-intercept you would replace x with zero. Therefore:
5(0) + y = 9 => 0 + y = 9 => y = 9. When x is zero y is 9 which also means that the y-intercept is 9.
