Find and simplify the difference quotient    f(x+h) - f(x) for the following function.

                                                                      h

 

f(x) = -5x - 8

 

f(x) = -2x^2 - 6

 

f(x) = 6

         x

If f(x) = -5x-8, then [f(x+h) - f(x)]/h = [-5(x+h)-8 - (-5x-8)]/h

 

                                                   = [-5x - 5h - 8 + 5x + 8]/h

 

                                                   = -5h/h = -5

If f(x) = -2x² - 6, then [f(x+h) - f(x)]/h = [-2(x+h)² - 6 - (-2x² - 6)]/h

 

                                                       = [-2(x²+2xh+h²)-6+2x²+6]/h

 

                                                       = [-4xh - 2h²]/h

 

                                                       = h(-4x - 2h)/h  = -4x - 2h

If f(x) = 6/x, then [f(x+h) - f(x)]/h = [6/(x+h) - 6/x]/h

 

                                                 = {[6x - 6(x+h)]/[x(x+h)]}/h

 

                                                 = -6h/[hx(x+h)]  = -6/[x(x+h)]
