G = number of giraffes
E = number of elephants
B = number of bears
The problem gives:
G + E + B = 34 (34 mammals total; “rest are bears”)
G = E - 5 (“5 less giraffes than elephants”)
Put the value of G into the first equation:
(E - 5) + E + B = 34
2E + B = 39
Then, here are the possibilities:
