Let the number in the tens place = x
Let the number in the ones place = y
Using this information, we can write a simple equation or two.
y = 2x eq1
x + y = 3 eq2
We can substitute eq1 into eq2 so that we have only on equation to solve. Lets get eq1 in terms of x.
x + 2x = 3
3x = 3
Divide both sides of the equation by 3.
x = 1
Next we substitute the value of x into eq1 to solve for y.
y = 2(1)
y = 2
So the number is going to be 12.
