You want to get an equation that has only x on one side of the equal sign and a number on the other side.
1.3x + 2.8 = 0.5x - 4.48 subtract 0.5x from both sides
0.8x + 2.8 = -4.48 subtract 2.8 from both sides
0.8x = -7.28 divide both sides by 0.8
x = -9.1
Check:
1.3(-9.1) + 2.8 = 0.5(-9.1) - 4.48
-11.83 + 2.8 = -4.55 - 4.48
-9.03 = -9.03
