An experienced carpenter could build a house in seven days. How much would he have to finish of he worked six days?

If he can build 1 house in 7 days (1/7)  then he can build x house in 6 days ( x/6).  Set the two equal to each other ( 1/7 = x/6), cross multiply ( 7*x = 1* 6) and solve for x.   7x/7 = 6/7, x = 6/7.  He can build 6/7 of a house in 6 days, which means he would still have 1/7 left to complete.
