(For the question posted as the title)
X + 5 = - 7
You have:
X + 5 - 5 = - 7 - 5 (subtracting 5 from both sides to isolate X)
X = -12
(For the second question)
So for this one, you first cancel out the 3/4 by multiplying both sides by 4
3/4 * 4 * (4/5x - 2) = 11/4 * 4
3 * (4/5X - 2) = 11
Then dividing by 3
3 / 3 * (4/5X - 2) = 11 / 3
(4/5X - 2) = 11 / 3
So here, I'm not sure if it's supposed to be (4/5)X - 2 = 11 / 3 or 4/(5X) - 2 = 11 / 3, so I'll solve it both ways to be safe. (first case, X is in the numerator; second case, X is in the denominator)
Assuming it is (4/5)X - 2 = 11 / 3
First add 2 to both sides to isolate the (4/5)X
(4/5)X - 2 + 2 = 11 / 3 + 2
(4/5)X = 11 / 3 + 2
Find a common denominator for the right hand side
(4/5)X = 11 / 3 + 6 / 3
(4/5)X = 17 / 3
Now cancel out the 4/5 on the right hand side by first multiplying both side by 5
(4/5)X * 5 = (17 / 3) * (5 / 1)
4X = 85 / 3
Divide both sides by 4
4X/4 = (85 / 3) / 4
X = 85 / 12
Assuming it is 4/(5X) - 2 = 11 / 3
Start again by adding 2 to both sides
(4/5)X - 2 + 2 = 11 / 3 + 2
4/(5X) = 11 / 3 + 2
Find a common demonimator
4/(5X) = 11 / 3 + 6 / 3
4/(5X) = 17 / 3
Multiply both sides by 5X
4/(5X) * 5X = 17 / 3 * 5X
4 = 85X / 3
Multiply both sides by 3
4 * 3 = (85X / 3) * 3
12 = 85X
Divide both sides by 85
12 /85 = 85X / 85
X = 12 / 85
